The 50-Word Vignette Challenge

50-Word Vignette #50

Prompt: Wake

A year ago, I began this Friday Fifty-Word Vignette Challenge. Such fun I've had along the way. Such lessons I've learned. Back then, I was freshly awakened in my new life. A year on, a new dawn beckons. Thank you all for travelling with me. It's time now to wake ...

One final time ... Anybody else like to join in and write their own? Just post it in the comments. All welcome, and I hope you've had as much fun as me along the way, whether you've contributed your own, or simply enjoyed reading our offerings.

For those of you who remember what I said when I launched this challenge, a song by Kate Bush was part of the inspiration, so it seems fitting to wrap up this year-long journey with that song:

Well... of course I remember... ;)

And so it ends... not with a whimper but with a snowflake...
Thank you, Jenny. I've loved every moment of the vignette-writing. Such a mix of laughter, tears & irreverence!

It signals my own leaving. Can't see myself coming back to LJ anymore. See you in other places!
Love in abundance

A snowflake is the perfect way to end. :O)

One of LJ's great gifts was that it meant the two of us met. And yes, we most certainly shall meet again, both virtually, and physically - and next time, it'll be as fellow country-women :O)

Snowdrifts of love.

My inner voice whispers, ‘Go on, you know you want to.’
‘Too obvious,’ I insist. ‘And in any case, a good wake needs something a bit more upbeat.’
‘You reckon?’
‘I’m Irish!’
‘It is ending with a snowflake though, the way it began?’
‘I know, but one this is wicked!’

Perfect. And very clever!

The motorboat slices through the lake, sending out waves that jostle our canoe. We ride out the wake, waiting for the water to smooth, waiting for stillness to return.

Is it really the end? Thank you for hosting these vignettes and posting the prompts. It's been fun!

I love your closing vignette. It has a sense of a held breath about it.

And you're very welcome. It's been huge fun.

Tam took a coin and skipped it across the fountain's pool. Talia wished she had one herself. Any action would help her curb these fidgets.

"If we found some bodies," she said, brittlely, "we could have a wake and then a funeral."

"There aren't any. Even the morgue is empty."
