The 50-Word Vignette Challenge

50-Word Vignette #47

Prompt: Surrender

'Put your weapon down. There is no escape.'

'In your dreams, darling. You know I have the higher moral ground.'

'Morals have nothing to do with affairs of chocolate and cream.'

Their forks clashed and tangled across the table.

'I don't care! I'll never surrender the last slice of cake.'

‘Damn daisies.’ She picked another one and tried again.
‘She loves me, she loves me not.’
The petals fluttered to the ground like moths.
‘She loves me, she…’
Acceptance lost the battle. There was nothing for it, and all she could do was surrender and accept she was in love.

the white flag was raised
it meant surrender
i was exhausted sweaty
it had been a long struggle
i wondered what would happen now
i was thirsty - parched
my body ached
my mind was blank
wanted it to be over
i didn’t care any more
who was my enemy now?

A poster showed General Graysmith in a martial pose, with the slogan, "Never surrender."

"Lab?" said John.

"No," said Rosa. "History classroom."

The other three went on, down the hallway. She was glad. They had not thought of giving up, but the poster reminded her that was always a possibility.

and the muse won't shut up
She poked at the dials. Lights flared, red, amber, green, but fortunately confined to the controls.

"I can't read his handwriting here," said John.

"Talia, help him," said Rosa. "You're good at that."

"It's my lousy handwriting," she explained as she took the book. And slowly it surrendered its secrets.
